Ever Given: When the Machine Runs Aground, it Produces Images

When the container ship Ever Given ran aground and blocked the Suez Canal for several days in March 2021, its image quickly became one of the most popular memes spreading across social media platforms. This incident and the images it produced obviously hit a nerve during the collective experience of crisis induced globally by COVID-19. This constellation tells us something about how the circulation of images and the often problematic assumptions of global mobility and connectivity are intertwined, historically and in the present moment.
